Re: Looking for advice on 1 lb. bp rocket delay comps

I believe they just slow down their comp like I do its cheaper and lesstime
consuming nto make different comps when you can take a little bp and slow
it down, that way your propelant and delay comes from the same batch and is
more reliable and repeatable.

Ah, so many comps...so little time LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions. There is plenty of food for thought!

Does anyone know what Estes uses for a delay comp? Those engines sure
have
a good rep for being reliable and repeatable.

I add some more charcoal to my smaller rockets and add baking soda to the
comp for delays on 1inch rockets usualy 2% is plenty and you have to
experiment first to get the delay right.my first try came almost all the
way
back down before the ejection charge went off.good thing I didn't try it
with a flash header

And how much?

I'm looking to experiment a bit form my old win 39 formula to
possibly
find
something cheaper, but just as reliable.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Delay compositions may vary when made by different people due to
differences in chemicals.

I use a very slightly modified composition from Alan Yates' web page -
he calls it 'RP' - instead of aluminum, I mix it with titanium to get a
tail for the rocket.

18 Potassium Nitrate
6 Skylighter airfloat charcoal
3 Sulfur
2 Titanium

This burns fairly fast for a delay mix (it is a rocket fuel all by
itself). However, I prefer faster delay mixes because the effect of
slight differences in amount of delay used are minimized.

If you want a really slow delay that has little tail - try 70% perc and
30% sculpy clay. Mix it by dissolving the clay in acetone.
