Actually with no new stuff, I've been searching the archives quite a
bit...
And how do you connect to rec.pyro? The only method I know of is
through Google group...

P.S. Mike S what's your email address? Or can you email me?
Your internet service provider may give you some level of Usenet newsgroup access, but that free access seems to be waning since many people don't use it and providers are all trying to cut costs. I've had my AOL account since I first got onto the internet and nearly dropped them a couple years ago when they stopped providing Usenet access. If not for being lazy and not wanting to change my primary email address I definitely would have dropped them. Since I have a Macintosh and they basically have dropped support of any newer features for Mac owners they provide me nothing except a couple of long-standing email addresses now.
When I signed up with Comcast for my high-speed access it included an account with Giganews. A year or so ago that changed but I don't know if Comcast bought them or just decided to host their own newsgroup servers. In any case the server name changed and I use the same logon now that I always used to get into Comcast's website.
There are a number of commercial news servers which will sell you newsgroup access. For example Mike uses Newsguy. The pay services generally have a total monthly limit on the amount of downloads. Usenet is still a big channel for download of movies, music, audio books, etc., and hosting all those binary attachments for thousands of newsgroups takes a lot of storage. That is also why retention times have shrunk over the years. You might be in the middle of downloading pieces of a movie for example and certain pieces of it may never reach your server or may have been there and been deleted already before you can get them. Generally the servers offering longer retention times, more feeds from the internet, more groups hosted, and larger download limits, will charge more than others for their access.
There are still a few free Usenet servers around such as Google/groups (formerly Dejanews). Since you're not paying for the access you have little to say if they should drop access to rec.pyrotechnics or some other favorite group of yours tomorrow. I would imagine they probably have very low retention times for binary posts also to save on hosting costs. Since bit torrent appeared I don't download anything from Usenet anymore so I really don't know. Who wants to hassle with finding, downloading, and assembling hundreds of pieces of a movie or CD when you can download it quickly and automatically off bit torrent or Limewire and be done with it?
