Harry --
Recently I've been geting a bit more circumspect about having unique
identifiers show up on Usenet. We all know anyone serious can trace by IP
addy and so forth. Ain't no hiding from the man on the Net. I have a rather
unusual name in real life, though. This makes it easy to use google to turn
up everything I've ever posted anywhere, or almost. John Smith turns up
lotsa stuff though. Next week it might be "*** Johnson." I just don't like
the idea that any boondocks d!ck attorney, HR department, or whoever ought
to be able to get a complete dossier on me by typing my name into google and
hitting "enter."
I disagree with your assessment of pseudonymity. I've always thought any
work, whether a Unsenet post or a book, ought to stand on its own merits. In
this field especially, it ought to be caveat emptor. I don't post BS. If
someone else does, it's not my responsibility.
I'm getting on in years, but for younger folks, especially, they ought to
take the hint. No reason to make it easy for folks to trace one's personal
data when nowadays it lasts for all practical purposes indefinitely. If I
were younger, not only would I use a pseudonym to post to this group, I'd
use a proxy server as well. I wouldn't want to have a prospective employer
know I'd posted anything in rec.pyro or any similar groups. Everyone knows
pyros are weird bast@rds, no? We usually don't get a chance to explain --
the app just gets routed to the circular file. Google is now a part of
routine background checks. The rules of the game have changed. We can only
deal with it.

John Smith, try posting using your real name. It will enhance you
credibitlity, particularly since you are unknown on this
rec.pr\yrotechnics newsgroup.
Then too, if you are Warren K, why not simply post using your real
name?
I'm confused by all the secrecy and annonimity stuff. It simply
doesn't belong in a newsgroup devoted to subjects in which the
slightest
error can (please pardone me LadyKate for saying this) blow your balls
off or worse. Kids don't realize this, experienced adults do or
should.
Most of us who regulatly post here know each other, and I suspect, as I
do, judge the creditiblity of posts based on what we know about the
poster. That's why we all hold posters like Mike, Leo and others in
such high regards. John Smith we don't know, but Warren we do know by
reputation.
So, why the charade? I simply don't get it.
Kindest regards, Harry C.
