California has been monitoring and documenting "perchlorate"
contamination in some of its water supplies for some time. Most of the
contamination results from improperly handled waste and/or loosely
controlled testing and use of ammonium perchlorate widely used by
aerospace (and other industries) in the fabrication of rocket motors.
While there's a legitimate point to be taken in the need to control
perchlorates and other possible source of drinking water contaminants,
there's little doubt that most (if not all) of the contamination finds
its way into their water supplies from the activities of industry - not
the activities of hobbyists purchasing small amounts from (among
others) Ebay. Note the reference to "a national security risk" ... a
classic use of the red herring if ever there was one. Combining agendas
in this manner is a time-honored way for demagogues, many of whom are
elected, to achieve any number of ends.
One wonders how possible future California legislation will deal with
fireworks, even those produced and fired by licensed professionals.
Shall a "perchlorate" ban affect them as well? Given time, you're left
with little room to wonder.

Assemblyman Joe Baca, Jr. Asks eBay to Slam the Brakes on Rocket Fuel
Sales
Assemblyman Baca asks eBay to remove perchlorate sales off its online
market
San Bernardino - In a letter to eBay North America President William
Cobb, Assemblyman Joe Baca, Jr. (D-Rialto) asked the cyber giant to
stop selling perchlorate on its online market.
While perchlorate is a legally purchasable product, pending legislation
would require the California State Department of Toxic Substance
Control to develop guidelines for the safe disposal of perchlorate
waste.
"It is appropriate that eBay cease and desist any future sales of this
harmful chemical until such guidelines are in place to ensure that the
drinking water of our communities does not suffer from the errant users
of perchlorate," said Assemblyman Baca. "While the state and federal
government work towards the cleanup of contaminated water sites, the
business community should take steps to ensure that there would be no
future contamination from perchlorate materials. I believe the removal
of perchlorate from the eBay web site would be a good start."
Currently, eBay offers for sale and purchase the chemical perchlorate,
a rocket fuel that has contaminated over 350 water wells in California,
on their auction web site. This allows access by a wide segment of the
public and may pose a national security risk.
