Coal for pyro (again)

Harry's post about coal use in pyrotechnics got me thinking. I'd love
to do some experiments -- but I live in Southern California. I've
never even SEEN coal. No place around here sells it -- even the
farriers here use propane.
I've found several places online that sell it. But they sell it in 50
or 70 lb bags. The coal itself is not expensive but the shipping costs
are quite a bit more than the coal itself, and I don't need 50 lbs in
any case.
So -- does anyone on this newsgroup have coal either lying around or
know where they can get a handful? I'd only want a pound or two, if
only for the kids' stockings next Christmas. I'd pay, say, $25 for the
handful of coal, the shipping (a Priority mail box, which is about 9
bucks, would be fine) and the bother.
Not a big deal, but even if I can't make any use of the stuff, it would
still be neat to see it. I think my boys would get a kick out of it as
well. Rocks that burn. Cool.
Bob
