Joel, I've used this formulation for blue cut stars over many years
(actually decades). It's usually credited to Weingart.
48 Potassium Chlorate
16 Barium Nitrate
18 Paris Green
3 Dextrin
10 Shellac
Sometimes I would also add a small percentals of fine aluminum for
brightness, but at the cost of detracting from the color saturation.
And do, I don't know the reason for the dextrin, but since it was in
the formulation given to me I've always used it.
Usually I used these stars in 3-break color and report shells.
When used in a mixed color shell, the blue was largely washed out by
the red and white stars.
