Too glib. Writing and reading are clearly and obviously two facets of
language. And it's also clear that it's possible to learn a foreign language
without ever hearing or speaking it.

what can it mean to say that they are "entirely different species"? In most
languages, orthography exactly parallels speech, and even in English the
correspondence is rising 90%.
