I'm finding out about your hardware and the OS [and newsreader]

Very noble, Mike.

His hardware can run 8.6 or 9.x, but he has the install disk for the 8.6
so that's what he reverts back to when he needs to.

If PTD (or anyone else) is having trouble getting a decent newsreader
for Mac, I use (and recommend) MT-Newswatcher:
http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/

The oldest version there does OS 9, no earlier than that
http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/downloading.html

... but he doesn't actually need a newsreader, as he has experience with
his old Mozilla/netscape.

And for a newsserver (doesn't matter if you're on a Mac!), I use the
free and pretty decent one from aioe.org:
nntp.aioe.org

Yes. I would say he needs a newsserver. I have an aioe account. I use
readfreenews mostly, but it is closed to subscriptions now. I also have
shared-secrets, x-privat, free.teranews, datemas.de, infoave and some
others.

I used to use news.individual.net which is a bit more reliable and has
much better spam filtering, but it's 10 euros a year (still
ridiculously cheap).

Individual is a great text news server because of its filtering. There
are commercial NSPs which are actually cheaper for a text news user
because you can buy a nonexpiring block for less than 10 USD which will
last a lot longer than a year and which you could access binaries if you
needed to for something.
