Thanks to all who entered SCWC3. My winner is wezay with his/her
elegant clue for the word static:
Still creating radio interference ? (6)
I understand wezay is now expected to run SCWC4.
I said in my announcement that I might like to plagiarise the winning
clue for one of my crosswords, but I'm probably going to use a
variation of an entry from Mark Brader ("Lying still (snow, for
example) (6)") to give
Not shifting snow, perhaps (6)
Brief comments follow to all the clues submitted, which by their
brevity may seem rather blunt - apologies for any hurt feelings.
It's cracking musical? Just the opposite! (6)
Nice construction, but I don't see a clear def.
Make lace in nearly ill interference(5)
I din't know about TAT = make lace. Meaningless surface.
Standing still is positively electric(6)
Fair, rather meaningless.
Immediately, one head of cavalcade becomes stationary (6)
I didn't know about STAT.=immediately either! Good surface.
Positively excited but still calm.
Nice clue, meaningful surface, though my knowledge of physics is not
great, but I'm not convinced that 'static' = 'positively excited',
though.
Table first off should be stable !
Nice surface, but I think this is using 'table' = statistic, which I don't buy.
Still creating radio interference ? (6)
Very nice. Simple but effective. My winner.
Back talk: It's tacit without it, perhaps (6)
I'm probably being dim, but I couldn't work this one out.
Noise causes middle of moustache to twitch (6)
Another good one with an amusing if unlikely surface
Starts off still... transfixed... and then is changeless (6)
Good, but the choice of words could be more imaginative. In
particular, 'and then is' suggests a progression, but 'still',
'transfixed' and 'changeless' are pretty much synonymous.
This interference wouldn't go away (6)
Nice and simple.
Lying still (snow, for example) (6)
I like the def. but the surface doesn't quite sound natural
Criticism of confused tactics, nearly absent (6)
I don't understand the def, and I'd say c = 'about' / 'approximately',
which is not the same as 'nearly'.
Still cast it asunder (6)
Fair but a bit dull
Overjoyed - no City noise! (6)
Apart from the acknowledge parochiality (?!), this is nice.
Sea lavender. Pruned and dead (6)
Rather hard, especially with a vague def.
Hybrid cat it's hissing (6)
I'm not sure about the anag indicator or the def.
Gathers dust in attics (6)
Where's the anag indicator? And it should be 'Gathering dust'.
Sound that appears to interrupt communication intially (6)
OK, though the 'initially' destroys the &lit-ness.
