3, w/ the trusty old Zeiss 75 f3.5. No batteries to expand, circuit boards
to heat warp, plastic lens barrels to get misaligned in the heat, and other
probs I havn't thought about.

Yes, you could, with a +4 dioptre close-up lens pair.
You needn't fill the frame, either. Just use the 24x36mm central
portion of the negative.
