OT - the 50 states?

I took a bet with my son last night that I could name all 50 states
without referring to a map. I made a list of 50 names and it turns out I
was pretty close - I got 48 correct. According to the internet there is
a State called West Virginia, which I didn't have (I had Wichita as a
state) and I also named D.C. as a State. According to Wikipedia it ain't
a state - so what is it? I also missed Minnesota.

However, I am intrigued with the inclusion of Puerto Rico on the list
provided by Wikipedia. What's up with that?
