So what is the situation specifically for Nikon if you:
-Are a US citizen
-Are in another country, say Japan
-Buy some Nikon gear in Tokyo, say at Yodobashi or Doi or Sakuyara.
As a foreigner, you avoid paying local taxes or get a rebate at the
airport when you leave.
-After you get home, your gear needs a repair, within the one year
warranty period.
So, what will Nikon USA do? Will they even refuse to repair the item,
even if you paid for the repair (as I have heard it)?
WHO ISSUED THE WARRANTY ON YOUR CAMERA GEAR? NIKON USA OR SOME OTHER
ENTITY?
When I bought Honeywell Pentax equipment, there was a provision for repairs
to be made for international customers that bought through the official
importer in whatever country they were in. Pentax issued an International
Warranty, and the official importers honored it on a reciprocal basis.
Now, if you buy outside the US, and you self-import, Nikon has no LEGAL
OBLIGATION under US law to provide warranty service, since they did not
import the goods. They may, however, have a reciprocal agreement with the
other country's importer.
My point is that one should not assume that they are entitled to service or
support from any entity except that which issued the original warranty. You
do not have the legal RIGHT to have your cake and eat it, too.
If Nikon USA elects to provide you with service it is due to factors other
than any legal requirement. Perhaps you should choose another manufacturer,
with less stringent enforcement policies. The choice is yours.
