Okay... What's a Shoot-In without some comments, eh! (For the
uninitiated, that "eh" is because I'm Canadian.) Here's my take on
"Garrulous" Alan's chosen topic:
Mark Lauter - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748380
Nice colour. (BTW, the "u" is also because I'm Canadian.) I wish
that there were some EXIF data attached. I'd like to know the
shutter speed. It looks like that thing was going FAST. I'm glad
Mark provided the title. I Goggled this race and learned a lot about
it. I even saw a map of the track. Where was this photo taken Mark;
on the 1st Street straightaway maybe? It looks like you were pretty
close.
Bowser - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748398
Bowser gets extra points for providing a write-up to explain this
archived photo. (Before looking at the EXIF data, I was afraid that
this was an April 2006 photo and that it was already this warm at
Cape Cod We still have snow around my house, so that was a
disconcerting initial impression.) Your image sure fits the mandate.
There's lots of street visible. I wish there were less skin fitting
visible but, alas, maybe that's just me. At least the focus is
thankfully soft. Very soft! ;)
Jim Kramer - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748399
I'm glad I had just finished my breakfast when I looked at the SI
page. I might not have eaten it if I'd seen this image first. :)
Your photo is a perfect fit with the mandate. I hope that poor furry
thing was road-kill and not 'bait'. What was it anyway? Those
vultures look like an over grown crow with a face that's in bad need
of wrinkle cream. I'd never seen this kind of vulture before. I
thought that all vultures looked like Turkey Vultures and had red on
their faces. Interesting. I find that it's hard to bring out the
detail in a black animal like that. I wonder if this had been shot
in 16-bit RAW with some PP'ing, if you might have been able to get a
bit more definition in the vultures feathers.
Joseph Kewfi - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58772030
It looks like a street. Fits the mandate alright. But those
people... they look like they are drunk... or high... or trained
marshal arts assassins... or perhaps this is just a frame from a
"kick-boxers gone wild" video?
Ken Nadvornick - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748400
Another archived shot that meets the mandate well. Ken also gets
extra points for surpurb record-keeping. I don't think that many of
us would be able to say what kind of enlarger lens we used 22 years
ago. I'm impressed. Tri-X always has its own 'feel'. I like it and
used to use it a lot. Nice 'news photo' that reminds me of the days
when I too shot B&W a lot. "Thanks for the memories!"
Bret Douglas - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748401
An interesting shot. I know that a photo is supposed to tell it's
own story but in this case, I can't help but wish that there were
some description included with your submission to tell use the rest
of the story. The impression I get is that this man is engaged in
some sort of devotional moment but there's something about the image
that doesn't seem to quite fit with that interpretation. Perhaps
Bret has done a posed self-portrait? I like the pink and blue
colours. Now if I could just read that monogram on the shirt a
little better to see if it is "BD"...
Bob Flint - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748402
Does anyone else still yearn for the 'good old days' of mercury
vapour street lights? (And "Yes", I'm old enough to know that
incandescent street lights were really the "old days" and that gas
lights were the original street lighting.) Regardless, IMHO any of
those lights have better colour than high pressure sodium lights. On
the other hand, Bob has accurately captured the colour of these
lights, so good marks to him for doing so. That looks like a closed
shopping mall in the background as seen from a residential street. I
like the framing. The photo is a wee bit soft for my taste. Perhaps
that was intentional or perhaps a result of the 1.6 sec exposure; not
sure.
Rusty Shakleford - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58772031
Nice to see that spring is arriving in some parts of the world. I
guess it will come to my area soon. (Read "jealousy".) This is a
good fit with the street mandate in 2 ways; Rusty was standing on a
street and also included it in the photo. I like the fact that the
clouds are not blown out. That can be hard to avoid in a shot like
this. Good job.
Tom Gabriel - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58748404
Who would have thunk; a traffic jam in Martinique! I like the
mystery about where you could have been standing to get this shot
with a 93mm focal length. Perhaps it's cropped? I'm trying to
decide if I like the leaves on the left or not. I like the ones on
the right but I'm not sure about the ones on the left. Otherwise, I
like the framing, with the long row of buildings on the left.
Bob Hickey - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58750112
This image speaks directly to the 'seedy' side of the street theme.
I really expected to see more of that. Maybe SI participants aren't
as 'adventurous' as I had thought. Getting 'seedy' shots means going
to 'seedy' areas. Maybe that dissuaded such entries. I would have
preferred a bit more contrast and sharpness in this image. I like
the framing.
Frank Sheffield - http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/58767803
Frank wins the special SI "sense of humour award". He also gets
bonus points for using Canadian equipment (ThePod.ca) while his
normal "PupPod(tm)" was on holiday. I'm not sure about Frank's
choice of a bird house to place on the street but I suspect (given
his keen sense of humour) that this may be his way of "giving the
bird" to his fellow SI entrants. Nice work Frank! BTW, I really do
like the low angle on your shot.
That's it... Now, I'm off to find some people playing "Twister"...
