I'd suggest going to a locally owned camera store and asking if they've taken any FULLY MANUAL 35mm SLR cameras in as trade recently. Get them to show you what they have in used cameras.
If you've got a local community college that has continuing education courses, they're 99 & 44/100& likely to have one on photography. See if you can talk to the instructor and get him to recommend a good local shop & perhaps the instructor will know someone who has a good camera for sale.
I use Pentax cameras, and they made a model called the K1000 that is fairly readily available, and can be found for reasonable prices with a good 50mm lens. It's generally acknowledged as the quintesential "student" camera. All manual, it lacks a couple of desirable features, but it's a rock solid entry level camera.
But other manufacturers made comparable models. Someone else can tell you what Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Minolta ... might have offered that are comparable.
