a "normal" lens

A "normal" lens orignally meant nothing more than the 50mm that "normally"
came with a new camera. The reason it came with a new camera wasn't because
its magnification was equal to that of what we "normally" see with the
unaided eye--it's not, anyway, being off by several mm--it came with a new
camera because, unlike almost any other lens in its class (extremely fast &
sharp) it can be produced cheaply; in fact, even today a 50mm 1.8 is the
cheapest lens offered in just about any lineup (I can't speak for the uber
cheap/crappy zooms that come with a camera today, though it would stand to
reason they are even cheaper than the 50, or at least cheaper to produce).
