The 640K statment was an eary 80s thing, in the 70s we said that 64K
would be all the RAM anyone would ever need.

I remember arguing with the guy who built my first computer that I
really needed a 5g hard drive. He couldn't conceive of an app that
would require that much storage...and 5g was the largest I could buy
at the time. --

Young whippersnappers!
My first PC had a 20M hard drive, and I thought I had all the storage
I would ever need! Of course, before that I was using the school's
Digital PDP-8 with a 4K magnetic core memory.

I remember using a cassette tape-based storage unit with an old Apple
clunker that ran on a TV screen.
It was essentially a standard tape recorder that recorded all sorts of
horrible screeching noises that the "computer" interpreted as very simple,
slow lines of code.
