ALIEN Jones* - sunset boats
-P&S is against the rules (ha ha) bzzt! <pounding the gavel> well, nice shot anyways, 1/15 sec is hard to hand hold.
Tom Gabriel - “Prayers”
-This is awfully dark and I wonder when that is appropriate to show a dark scene as dark, a light scene as bright. I understand though how the candles might have become blistering blobs with more exposure. I'm curious if you tried other exposures.
Jim Kramer - child at computer
-Useful example of high ISO fast lens to get a hand-holdable 1/30 sec shot. The darn white balance looks too normal though <grin> as if it were in daylight.
Paul Furman (me) - city scene
-I shot a bunch that night at ISO 1600 but I wonder if those are so grainy, it's a shame. It was possible to lay the camera on the bench & get a proper 6 second ISO 200 exposure in this shot and it is so much cleaner that way. I did do a lot of post-processing to reduce contrast, which is inherent in the night scenes: the lights are too bright, the sky boring black.
Ken Nadvornick* - poker by coleman lamp
-I like the brightness in this, and plenty of pure black so there's no doubt it's a dark scene. Great stuff.
Bob Flint - snowy back yard
-Is that light from the sodium vapor streetlights? Those things are the curse of modern night photography. B&W is the solution where no other colors exist. I'm inclined to say this is underexposed & needs more contrast but then it wouldn't look like a night shot. Maybe something to break the evenness of the lighting or a simpler framing to show off the evenness.
Mark Lauter - "Painting with Grass at Sunset."
-This goes too far as an abstract (& I like that sometimes), I prefer this version: http://marklauter.com/gallery/MiscColor/SunnyWeeds_001
Bowser* - boy & laptop by firelight
-Great shot. The light areas make this work, the firelight works with the glow from the screen.
Mardon Erbland - wife by candlelight in mirror
-Seems to be telling a specific story with the mirror & candle. A lovely image but I'm dying to know the story... it just seems too loaded knowing it's probably just an experiment for this mandate. Maybe a poem or something that explains things <grin>.
Al Denelsbeck - wine by candlelight
-I can feel the cookie tin <g>. Gorgeous product shot matching the color on the label with the wine in the glass but the background is too clean to feel like it's a real scene. We need a naked lady on a sheepskin fur by the fireplace in the background!
