While I'm no linguistic virtuoso I am aware of SOME grammatical rules and the proper definition and usage of SOME words. People often defend their poor language skills, or those failings in others, by claiming English is some variation of a "living language". I guess I see it more as a deterioration of norms. Counter cultural mob rule seems to say "the old rules don't apply to me" in every generation. A living language need not be ruled by anarchy but I can't stop the flood alone.

The "living language" is useful for twitting language snobs. Writing in vernacular - the counter cultural mob rule - in English dates to Chaucer's time.

My personal ire is currently reserved for "then" vs. "than". "Then" is temporal and sequential as in "First this then that" while "than" is comparative as in "This is better than that". No one likes to be corrected and seem foolish but rules are rules. However many will see grammatical, spelling, and usage errors in my own words... oh well. We have to hold each other accountable. That's another aspect of a living language... the 'buddy system'.

Also see confusion between "there", "their" and "they're".

It comes from an over-reliance on spell check.

I have a spelling checker
It came with my Pea Sea.
It plane lee marks fore my revue
Miss steaks aye can knot see.

Eye ran this poem threw it.
Your sure real glad two no.

Each frays comes posed up on my screen
Eye trussed too bee a joule.
The checker pours o'er every word
To cheque sum spelling rule.

Bee fore a veiling checkers

And if we're laks oar have a laps,
We wood bee maid too wine.

*** now bee cause my spelling
Is checked with such grate flare,
There are know faults with in my cite,
Of num eye am a wear.

Now spelling does not phase me,
It does knot bring a tier.
My pay purrs awl due glad den
With wrapped words fare as hear.

Of witch won should be proud,
