Compare the price of an F6 to a D2X, for a modern equivalent. Undoubtedly the
imaging chip is the single highest price component. Going by the pricing for an
extra battery, that doesn't seem to add much. The processing electronics and A-D
converter are probably the only other high dollar addition.
I think it is more a situation of high prices to recoup some R&D investment. The
volumes of the highest spec D-SLRs are quite low compared to the more consumer
oriented gear, so spreading out the costs over the sales numbers should keep
prices high. I do think that when the higher spec gear starts selling in higher
numbers, or at some point when the manufacturers think they got back enough from
their R&D investment, then the prices will drop.
