[SI] Duncan's Comments

Now that I am a veteran participant, I'll tell you what I think. There
is no need to listen, though. I tend to like the pictures that evoke
emotion.

It is nice to see lots of participants.

I like the juxtaposition of the textures of the flower and the
background. This shows a good understanding of the way the OOF
background will look in the final picture. The picture doesn't really
have much impact for me, though.

This picture works for me. It carries a feeling of lively, happy, and
precious childhood. If I knew the children I'm sure its impact would
be even greater. The OOF girl is just out enough to make you see the
other girl as the real subject, and to make it obvious that it was
deliberate, but not enough to be annoying. The expressions in the
girls' faces are terrific. Nice!

Technically very well done, and fits the mandate very well. But it
leaves me emotionally blank except for a bit of curiosity about what
I'm looking at.

Tom Hudson http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48370144

This leaves me confused. I'm not sure where to look. If I'm looking at
the in-focus grass, it is too scattered and random and causes my eye
to just jump around with no resting place. If I look at the picture in
its entirety, the emotion it conveys is one of the depth and the
intricacy of the grass, but the green background truncates that too
soon.

Well that's funny, and I like funny photographs. But it's a little
like a well-told joke with a poor punch line. I like the vivid green
splashes against the dark background, and the framing to isolate the
duck.

Martin Ouellet http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48370145

Another funny one. This just makes me laugh without worrying about any
punch(kick) line. I like it very much.

Bowser http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48370147

This gives me a good feeling of party time. Perhaps that's because I
have many memories of good, fun meals in Mexican restaurants. I like
the geometry of the lamp with the banner reflection through it. The
OOF bulbs give the impression of party balloons or bubbles. The
colorful, intricate nature of the shot enhances the feeling. Congrats
on noticing the scene's possibilities, and on a good photograph.

Alan Browne http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48370148

Another technically wonderful and pretty shot. I like the optical
illusion with the red object in the center of the circle flipping back
and forth. In fact, I can't even figure out the geometry. Curious and
captivating. For me, though, it is otherwise emotionally blank.

Jim Kramer http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48370149

Great use of the mandate. Notwithstanding the title, it leaves me
wondering what's going on that she is in such a distraught state while
the rest of the people seem so placid. The guy right above her might
even be smiling. Perhaps it would evoke a more distinct emotional
response if it were in a gallery with other photographs of the same
event or theme.

After looking at this at Pbase size, I realized I should have used my
old MF 50/1.8 to get an even narrower DOF. I apologize for all the
Exif. I didn't think it would appear like that. I'm learning (and
having fun). I was trying to make you smile.

Bret Douglas http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48427909

I like this because the narrow DOF evokes the feelings of teenaged
self-centeredness, while the whole content of the shot brings back
memories of the action and activitity at those games long ago. I can
almost remember sitting in the stands and "focusing" my attention on
some desirable across the court. A nice flashback.

Al Denelsbeck http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48427909

Cool photograph exhibiting a good understanding of what will happen
when the shutter is snapped. I'm not sure how it fits the OOF mandate,
though. Leaves me emotionally blank.

Paul Bielec http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48427910

This makes me feel like I have just gotten out, but the boat had
capsized and I had lost my glasses. It also made me think about
grabbing the cord and pulling the boat, and the perspective makes it
look wide and heavy. I like it.

Colin Donoghue http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/48429827

I like the magical feel to this, as well as the clothing and posture
that makes the child look young and old at the same time. Too bad
about the background, but it's a nice photograph anyway. Some work in
PS might make it really great.
