David, the term "quality" and the other one "good quality" do have
quantitative definitions. But, to many people, perhaps most, I
don't know, what is "good quality" is what THEY perceive. So, while
by strict defintion one cannot get a "good" print with far too few
PPI and likely can't get a "good" display on a 1980 x 1080 HDTV, if
the owner is happy, what else is there?

However, in this case, the owner appears NOT to be happy. But, like
all the other heated debates I've read over the years on
essentially the same issue - how many mega pixels are required? -
seems not to have a realistic outcome. Perhaps a precise and
definitive one IF we can second guess the technology used by the
OP's new TV to render non-TV graphics and we can second guess until
the proverbial cows come home about everything else, in the end, it
is STILL the OP's decision.

You may not be able to be precise and definitive, but my feeling is that in this case you can answer the question: If I have a 5-6-7MP camera (or whatever), is that good enough for HDTV? The discussions then move onto /how/ do I get that image on the screen. I do hope we find a satisfactory solution.

I know that our pictures even on a 26-inch 1360 x 1080 display look very good indeed (viewed from about 8 times picture height).

Cheers,
David
