Windows happily for years without reinstalling, even Windows NT.
Perhaps I'm just more careful in what I install on them.
Perhaps. But as has recently been said to another poster here,
that may be true for you, but this isn't necessarily the case for
others. Many others. Windows XP was supposed to be far more robust
than previous versions of Windows. It may be, but my experience is
that stability has been slightly improved at best. Your experience
may be due to luck in choosing more well behaved apps than care in
selecting them. Even Windows' rollback capability won't be of much
help if an instability promoting app. doesn't cause instability
until many months go by when the interaction with newly installed
"good" apps triggers the latent instability.
I have used every Windows release since Windows 3.1, except for WinME, and Vista. I have found WinXP to be quite stable. It runs on my 3 systems, and normally, I reboot only when MS releases updates that require a reboot for installation. That compares with daily (sometimes several times) reboots with Win95-Win98SE.
Yes, I am rather picky about applications. Have never used the rollback (system restore) feature of WinXP because it can cause more trouble than it cures.
