I put that number as a limit since at 14GP the pixel size would be
around 0.25 micron, or about 1/2 the wavelength of visible light. To

I actually HAVE a lens that resolves 0.20 micron, at the subject
in the visible ... a rather ordinary oil immersion microscope objective.
It is f/0.39.
f/0.36 microscope objectives are readily available, and, looking
at metals and rocks, you can get f/0.31. All these are available
truly diffraction limited (if, of course, you pay $4000-$10,000
apiece.)
You also get a very small field of view with a microscope objective,
an 100x oil immersion objective will cover what, about 1/2 mm or so?
The cost to cover 24mm x 35mm diffraction limited with an N.A. greater
then 1 gets pretty costly, it can be done but at a much higher cost
then $4000-$10000.
