In fact making a sensor that had 14GP on a 24mmX36mm would not be that
hard, but would it be all that useful?
I put that number as a limit since at 14GP the pixel size would be
around 0.25 micron, or about 1/2 the wavelength of visible light. To
make use of this sensor you would need a lens that was diffraction
limited at around f/1, even then the image would be a bit soft,
something like shooting at f/22 on a 40D.
Or, at f/0.5, sharp.
I actually HAVE a lens that resolves 0.20 micron, at the subject
in the visible ... a rather ordinary oil immersion microscope objective.
It is f/0.39.
f/0.36 microscope objectives are readily available, and, looking
at metals and rocks, you can get f/0.31. All these are available
truly diffraction limited (if, of course, you pay $4000-$10,000
apiece.)
