Hi All,
Hope this is the right forum.

Seems I need to buy a memory card for it.
Would like a card that could hold a fair amount of pics.
Old camera had a 512mb card that held about 400 pics but the new camera
probably takes more storage per pic.
So based on what size, type card should I get for similar storage.
Get a 2GB SD card. They're now extremely inexpensive and will
almost assuredly hold 400 or more images. If you ever take videos,
you may even want to get a larger SDHC card. Your question, though,
really can't be accurately answered unless you provide more
information, since you didn't tell us what your old camera was. But
you can easily answer your own question. Assuming that your current
512mb card isn't nearly full (and if it is, save your pictures and
format it), put the card in both cameras. Both cameras should show
how many new pictures will fit on the card. So if your old camera
shows that it can hold 100 more pictures and the new camera shows
that it can only hold 40, then to hold the same number of pictures,
your new card would have to be 100 / 40 * 0.5(gb) or larger, which
in this case would be 1.25 GB or larger. When you do this test,
make sure that the new camera is set either to its highest
resolution and lowest jpeg compression (picture quality settings),
or to whatever settings you plan to use.
Also are there any retailers you would recommend (preferably on line)
Have seen the SDHC cards that have a class rating, is this important given
the type of camera I am buying.
Any and all tips and advice much appreciated.
B&H is generally considered to be an excellent online retailer. I
bought a couple of Sandisk Extreme III 8GB SDHC Class 6 cards there
yesterday (walk-in, not online) for $80 each, and includes a
RescuePRO Data Recovery mini-CD and an SDHC reader, which could be
required if your computer's card reader isn't SDHC compatible. It
came with a rebate form that will reduce the price to $45 per card.
Standard 2GB SD cards should be in the $10 to $25 range, depending
on the card's version and speed. The slowest SDHC cards will
probably be all that your new Canon IXUS will need. Higher SDHC
class ratings indicate greater card speed. If DPReview has tested
your camera model, check the review's Timing/Performance page, which
should show the cards that were used for the test. The reviews are
listed on this page :
