It's more sensible to embrace the idea of sharing and to encourage
people to copy and distribute your work and to build upon it or modify
it as well as they see fit.
Then how the heck am I supposed to make a living if I give my stuff away?
That's an issue that has little to do with copyright. Artists have
been struggling
to financially exploit their creative skills long before copyright
issues.
Just because you try to sell your stuff instead of giving it away
doesn't mean people
are actually interested in buying your creations.
What incentive do I, or anybody, have to create new works?
What is your incentive to live? Making money? Is your life so shallow
it revolves
around making money and you can't see any reason to get out of bed in
the morning besides making money?
Ownership for bitstrings makes as little sense as ownership for DNA,
letters, concepts, words, numbers, etc.
Now you're being obtuse. You're denying the big picture.
What do you mean? Are you saying anything can be owned, bought or sold
simply because
we insist on doing so?
If you think sharing information online is a bad idea, you're probably
also opposed to the idea of public libraries because people can read
books there all day without being a paying member of the library or
paying anything for the books?
Somebody paid for the books.
Things that are being shared have also been paid for. Where I live
there is a levy
on blank media to compensate for copyright infringement.
