It makes the LCD less susceptible to damage since the normal position is to have the LCD in the closed position.

The tilt/swivel LCD is useful for much more than just Macro work. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but far from ugly, I think that the functionality contributes to more attractiveness. Canon dropped the tilt/swivel to save money, which is too bad. They even dropped RAW capability in the G7, then brought it back in the G9.
