Electronic viewfinders are going to get better (higher definition,

Maybe not straight out of the box, but many cameras have a video
output socket of their live view/EVF. This can be plugged into a TV or
laptop or battery powered LCD monitor either via a wire or a radio
transmitter.

The image resolution is not great though. Right now any sort of
live-view from a camera is not high-def. "Video" output definitely isn't
good enough to replace the OVF. I'd say what is needed is at least
megapixel definition. At the moment EVFs are about 25% of the way there.

One use of external EVF would be for a studio photographer to have a
high-def LCD monitor screen (Dell 30" 2560 x 1600, for example) plugged
into their camera's EVF port giving a live-view of what they're about to
shoot. They can zoom in on a particular area to fine-tune focus, bracket
areas for selective histograms etc. before finally taking the shots they
want.

Assuming the designers get rid of the mirror system in regular dSLR
bodies it might be feasible to fit a high-definition megapixel-plus EVF
screen and fold the optical path between it and the eyepiece so that it
presents to the user like a traditional OVF. External EVF adaptors
(HUDs, goggles etc.) could be offered as add-on extras (probably with
wireless connectivity).
