I have many digital images of about 5Mb in size.
What is the best way to reduce these in size to about 1Mb to save space?

1) you could resize to smaller dimensions
2) if jpeg images, you could increase compression. Generally it can be
increased a LOT before you notice much difference.
Generally, you can lower the setting to around 60% without marked
degradation of the display on a monitor.
