that's why there are diagnostic tools to tell you what's wrong. a lite
version ships with every mac, while technicians get the full version.
or if the machine powers on, just boot it in verbose mode and see where
it's getting hung up.
While everyone criticizes the BSOD on a PC at least it has an error code
there so you can start looking in the right place for a fix. My view is that
because there are so few Macs compared to PCs out there, the problem only
looks worse for the PC. and running any computer, be it Mac or PC without
some form of virus protection now days is an open invitation to wake up
sorely embarrassed one morning.
for a pc yes. for a mac, there are no os x viruses in the wild. the
only malware are proof of concepts and require the user to actively
download and install them, and provide the administrator password.
there's no protection against stupid users, unfortunately, on any
platform.
