And yet starngely you feel compelled to repost the whole thing.

What does that make of you?

It says I'm a staunch idealist who just has to take a stand, regardless
of the consequences...

Damn the bandwidth used? Next you will be posting in
HTML......................... ;-)

Well, I have my version of Outlook set to reply in whatever format the
message originally was posted. But, I only post in text, and my Outlook
Express reads in HTML. That way, I enjoy the best of both worlds, not to
mention it is the only way my screen reader works acceptably.

As for bandwidth, there are many ways to waste it: advertising, posts about
advertising in a photographic forum, excessive quoting, cross-posting,
religious posts in non-religious groups, ditto dating posts, not to mention
how some sysops have their systems configured.

But, with today's mega computers that can stream audio and video, store
billions of webpages, and process really wicked searches, I don't think the
itty-bitty bandwidth of Usenet as a whole, let alone one or two groups,
counts for much more than a drop in the digital universe.

Now, if you go back ten or fifteen years when a 10 or 14 Gig hard-drive was
barely imaginable, it was a different matter altogether. People were
actually booted off systems if they posted a quasi commercial post because
the sysops got flamed from all around the globe.

I just find it unfortunate that the commerce guys have to stick their noses
in every little nitche.

You've got it easy. You can just scan down your list of message headers,
click on whichever you want to read (assuming you are fully sighted), and
you're off to the races. As for me, I have to arrow down through the list
and listen to most of the header of each message before moving on. And, if
I want to find out how many messages are in the group, I need to listen to
the whole drawn out thing -- including five or six "bangs" (because that's
the way my reader pronounces '!' marks. You see, the message count is
always at the end of the info stream narrated to me.

I generally don't have much use for winers, but I really would like to find
some way to keep the commerce off the Usenet.

Grumbling,
Dudley
