I have a Fuji A340 which has four settings for taking pictures. They
refer to the megapixel settings of the sensor I assume. They are labeled
1M, 2M, 4N (normal), and 4F (fine). I have always shot with the setting
on the highest, i.e. 4F, but recently I got to wondering how it achieved
what the handbook refers to as "higher quality", when it is only a 4
megapixel camera after all. I took two identical pics, one at the 4N
setting and one at the 4F setting, and blew them up by the same amount
on the computer.
Frankly I can see very little difference between them, but the 4F pic
seems to have a minute touch of "smoothing" applied. I know there might
be an issue of correct terminology here, but I am very much an amateur
and hope what I mean is reasonably clear.
My question is - is there any point in shooting at the 4F setting as
opposed to the 4N, especially as it does produce a larger file size, and
I can't really see what advantage there might be in my test pics. The
handbook is absolutely no help at all, and I would love it if someone
who knows more about this that I do could help me. Thanks.
The difference between 4n and 4f would be the amount of jpeg compression
- more compression = smaller file = more data lost. Under certain
conditions, you may not be able to see any difference - under other
conditions the difference may be quite significant. With memory cards now
in the range of $10 per 1gb or less, it makes little sense to shoot with
less than your camera is capable of. With my Kodak P850 I always shoot in
RAW unless there is a very good reason not to.
