Is charging NiMh cells in parallel a good idea? I suspect that it

compartment. (The PS3 has four compartments.)
I agree that charging cells individually is preferable. The PS3
only presents the option to charge two AA or AAA cells in parallel
because it's a physically large charger (designed to hold C and D
cells), so two smaller cells can fit in the same battery
compartment. The only reason I can see to charge 8 small cells
simultaneously would be for convenience if for some reason you
needed to charge that many overnight. The charger's manual doesn't
make it too clear, but if you charge four cells individually (each
in their own charging compartment), they will charge twice as
quickly. So charging 8 cells simultaneously won't save you any time
as compared to charging them in two batches, 4 at a time. But
charging them in one larger batch means that if you're charging them
overnight, you won't have to get out of bed 7 hours later (or
longer, see the P.S.) to charge the second set of 4 cells.
P.S. The PS3 is an old, *slow* charger. When it took 7 hours to
charge 4 cells (14 hours to charge 8), NiMH cells had about 1/2 the
capacity of today's NiMH cells. I bought two of RayOVac's PS4 One
Hour chargers, and they were packaged with RayOVac's 1,600mAh NiMH
cells. Based on this, I'd guess that the PS3 would take 7 hours to
fully charge similar 1,600mAh NiMH cells, but would require just a
bit under 12 hours to charge today's 2,700mAh NiMH AA cells. If you
don't mind the long charge times and can get the PS3 at a good
price, or could use a C/D cell charger, the PS3 might be worthwhile,
but I'd pass on it and get a charger designed this century. :)
The ACCUPOWER ACCUMANAGER 20 BATTERY CHARGER also
charges all sizes of NiMh cells but it costs more than twice as much as the
Rayovac PS3. Is it worth the extra cost?
You haven't provided enough information. One assumption is that
the Accupower charger only charges up to 4 cells at a time, so both
chargers can charge up to 4 cells individually, giving neither an
edge there. You also didn't state any actual prices, only relative
prices. If the Accupower charger cost $2 vs $1 for the RayOVac PS3,
I'd say that it was worth the extra cost. If it was $200 vs. $100,
I'd say that it wasn't.
The Rayovac is $20 and the ACCUPOWER is $50. I keep a spare set of
cells for my camera and FRS radio so charging speed is not important
to me as long as the cells are charged in less than 24 hours. I
would rather charge them slowly so as to get the maximum life.
