Is your reader plugged directly into one of the primary USB ports built
into your computer, or are you using an auxiliary port? I am assuming
that you are using a desktop, not a laptop, with WinXP or Vista.
Another possibility: how many programs are running in background?
What are your computer specs? How much memory, processor speed,
available HD capacity (important for paging large files during
processing), etc.
I've got two computers in the mix here. The laptop is a Fujitsu
Lifebook with Win XP, 1.6ghz, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB HD. The desktop is an HP
Pavilion 724c with XP, P4 2.53 ghz, 2 GB RAM, 80 GB HD. I generally
transfer directly into the computers by plugging the card reader into
the primary USB ports. I also offload from the laptop to a LaCie 120
GB USB 2.0 mobile drive when I'm on the road, to keep the laptop's HD
from getting crowded. It's about 50% open at the moment.
Also, I have a 1TB Western Digital My Book Pro Edition II external
back-up drive where I park pretty much everything. That keeps the
desktop relatively clean (it's down to 8 GB free after last week's
shoot, and is due to be scraped off). The desktop has two USB 2.0
ports and one FW 1394. I've never tried the latter. The WD back-up can
run USB 2.0, FW 400 and FW 800.
Generally speaking, I shut down all unnecessay programs when I'm
processing, to maximize resources. I might keep Firefox open to check
e-mail, but that's about it.
Warning: some of those ngs have
almpost as many freaks, kooks etc as this one.
Good luck.
No wonder I feel so at home here. :)
