Re: DSLRs getting better, P&S remain in the gutter of photography

Yes I realised that megapixels are a marketing ploy on most P&S
cameras, I saw plenty of truely awful P&S cameras advertising 10mp or
more but I was more interested in the quality of the lens and it's
overal abilities, wasn't really interested in the number of pixels as
long as it was 4mp or more. I haven't tried setting the camera on a
lower resolution, but I was thinking of doing this when I go to Kenya
soon, I do have a 2GB fast SD card (and a backup cheapy 1GB card) but
even so I may be a bit "trigger happy" so I was thinking of reducing
the res to 5 or 6 mp not only to increase the number of pictures I
could fit on the card but also to possibly increase the range of the
zoom should I need it (though TBH I don't know if I will, the shots
I've taken so far at the 10x zoom have been very pleasing.
I may take some pictures in low light or perhaps of faster moving
objects when I could see that a higher ISO may be used but most will
be fairly well lit I should imagine. I'm not sure really, I haven't
noticed much noise in the test shots I've been taking so far at full
res but I don't think it's gone above ISO400 yet which in the reviews
was pretty acceptable as far as noise is concerned on the TZ3. Perhaps
I'll use max res during the day and just knock it down a little in
lower light or if I'm likely to be trying to take shots of a running
cheetah or something (I should be so lucky!)

Thanks for the info though it's very interesting. I like to learn
these things.

Rather than reduce resolution or quality, I would buy more SD cards for
what sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime trip! And remember to use the movie
mode - and take yet more cards!

Cheers,
David
