Well this has been a frustrating waste of time !!!
Must have tried 15 programs -some appallingly bad...
People do not seem to know the difference between what is a
feature and what is functionality (rudimentary at that)..
For example, how else can you explain that irfanview does not allow
drag and copy/move files ? or has no tagging of files so you have to
hold down the control key all day long ? (i use a stack of dvdr's)
As an aside, against my better judgment and in desperation, I even
tried MS's program,
forget the name. I chuckled when it crashed after only 30 seconds..
MS u suck !!!!!
in any event, I did find one pretty good program
"Exif Pro"
it has the best tagging feature - you hit tag mode, click on files
with the mouse
to select a group of files. The selected files are clearly indicated
unlike thumbs plus and
faststone which have tiny markers. Full support for RAW, html
cataloging which
is great because it has universal support. Copying and moving files is
a little kludgy
but overall the pro's out weigh a few negative things. For copying,
you should be able to drag
and drop, right click and copy and there should be a menu item as
well...exif has just
the menu item....I would like to email the author but the website has
no email link that
I can see...the interface is configurable and its pretty good for
digital photograpers
and I think its only $20...
for quick thumbnails I'm using irfanview which is speedy but should be
better than it is
considering it popularity...
thanks to all who posted...

I can't findsoftwarethat fits this criteria
1) folder tree structure ala windows explorer. Along with that, should
come right and left click drags to copy and move files to other
directories
2) Tagging. Sorry, I don't want to keep my hand on the control key
while I select files - I want to go into tag mode and then click away
3) If I'm moving or copying a file to another directory and a file
with the same name exists, I want to see the images involved before I
just select replace
4) raw image support ie canon
Although I can't suggest anything directly, I will suggest
consideration of
a different "mode" of operation. Rather than organizing through
"physical"
movement of tiles in directories, organize things virtually. Have
files be
"wherever" (we use half-year container directories with session
subdirectories)
but have an organized view of them that itself can be manipulated.
Meaning you still move images around however you want, but you're not
moving
the files, but the way they're organized in the the program's
database. There
are a lot of pragmatic advantages to this approach and a lot of
programs make
this method workable. There's a website with something like a couple
dozen
programs with their features put in a single large table (and links to
each). Don't
recall where it is but it should be google findable. For me it was
ironic that I
was ready to pay out big bucks for something good when a cheap one
($30)
turned out to be the best for my needs (which did not include Canon
raw support).
Post what you end up with!
