Hi,
I suspect this gets asked a lot but I'm struggling to decide so I'd
appreciate any comments anyone has that might push me one way or the
other.

I'm mainly looking for a general purpose holiday type camera but I
also
take shots of live music, so something that works well in low light
might
be helpful.

As far as I can tell the main differences are that the K100D has the
shake
reduction, a slightly better lens and uses AA batteries where the
D40
has
a better colour balance and better low light operation.

Anything else that might influence my choice?

Thanks
John

Both are basic entry level SLRs. Try one in the hand to see which on
feels
better and has a good control layout.
For my, I do like the idea of having shake reduction there in the
body.
Nikon has more lenses and better 3rd part lens support, so check the
lenses
you want to be sure Pentax has it.

More modern lenses. The D40 can't use many of the Nikon legacy
glasses that are often available for good prices relative to the cost
of new lenses.

Course they can, just have to meter manually.

With a SEPARATE meter. It isn't manual as in in-camera, the camera
cannot meter with the older lenses at all.
Most other DSLRs can meter with old lenses, in manual stop down mode
or better.

Not needed, simply take a shot and adjust or use sunny 16 rule and adjust
from there. Not hard.
