I just discovered I have to replace my HP photosmart inkjet 1115
printer and am looking for recommendations.
After using the photosmart portion of the old printer, I soon found I
preferred just using my Adobe PhotoShop software, so the new printer
will not have such applications. I just want a very good, reliable
color printer for my desk for home use. I print many spreadsheets as
well as work with crafts as well as print many photos. Someone
suggested splurging and getting the new laser color but I don't want
laser, as the colors are not as true when printing photos. I don't
care which brand. I have noticed the HP cartridges seem to be more
expensive that others. If they are worth it, I would still consider
the HP. Thanks Liz
For your b&w printing, I'd suggest you look at one of the inexpensive
lasers. I have a Brother HL1440 which we've been running on the original
toner cartridge for about two years. Augment that with any decent inkjet
for your photos. I'm quite happy with an Epson Stylus Photo R320. Another
possibility might be the new Kodak all-in-ones. Kodak says the cost of
consumables is about 1/2 of everyone else's.
I would like to echo Ray's suggestion. Between my wife and me, we do a lot of b/w printing, and I want to print good color. About 18 months ago I picked up an HP LaserJet 1020, now quite easily available for $99.99; it prints great b/w and is fast. (Side note: I have been a very happy user of LaserJets for 22 years when my department bought the original model; the only downside was a 5L, which had terrible feed problems.) When my HP inkjet printer died (7330, as I recall) I bought a Canon iP6700, which is great for color. Although I have had wonderful experiences with HP's lasers, the last two inkjets from them have disappointed me. I love the Canon; it is an ink burner, but that may be an illusion because I use it more than the 7330. And don't worry about the software that comes with your printer--all you really need is the driver; I always load everything because it's easier than being selective, but I never use the rest. And as far as I know every brand comes with stuff you don't need. A final note: the only downside to the two-printer approach is the amount of space needed. I have the LJ on a base that has four drawers for paper, and the inkjet is on a vinyl-covered wire stand that also holds my cable modem, an external HD and a power outlet.
