Face recognition isn't a gimmick: without it, P&S AF systems tend to
find something in the background with more contrast than your human
subject and focus on that.
(Of course, I don't know if the face recognition trick actually
solves this problem<g>, but assuming it does, it's a great idea.)

Many small-sensor cameras I have used try and focus on the /nearest/
subject.
