DSC W5 problems

I bought a Sony DSC-W5 quite some time ago. It's been great in every
way except one, and I've been pulling my hair out for the last two
years trying to solve it - I can't even find anyone else who says
they're having the same problem, and when I call the company, they
tell me, "Take it into a repair shop." Having worked a few years for
Future Shop, I don't have a lot of confidence in this idea. But I was
wondering if someone else might be familiar with this. It's not
really a huge deal, but when I switch the camera to Manual, everything
works fine except that I can no longer cnage the shutter speed
settings.. The little arrows are there, but the numbers have
disappeared from where they were previously, beside the aperture
indicator. It just *poof!* disappeared one day. I've tried
everything I can think of to try and get it back; I can't figure out
what I might have done to cause this problem.
Has anyone heard of this? Can anyone offer any advice? If so, could
you email me at stevedrost at hotmail dot com, or post a suggestion
here ? (I don't often read this group, but I might if I thought
someone could help me. :)
TIA.
