Yes, I have custom function 5 set to "does not emit"
I then put on a lens, set it to manual focus, mirror
lock-up, time exposure (this gives about a 3 second delay),
and trip the shutter. The AF assist light comes on.
The same light is used for red-eye reduction and as an indicator for the self-timer. Does the light flash? If yes it's probably the
self-timer and it will go off when the shutter opens.
Sorry, that wasn't clear enough.
The 30D doesn't have an "AF assist light" - it uses the the flash in
short bursts for AF. If you are referring to the light between the
shutter release and the lens then see my comment above. If you are
referring to the flash strobing then put down the flash. If you have
an attached flash that _does_ have an AF assist (which is usually red
or infrared) then simply turn off the flash.

Ray,
Thanks for helping. I am talking about the light between the
shutter and the lens. In the mode I am photographing
with, I have the flash down, and other settings as above.
When I press the shutter, say to do a 30 second time
exposure, the mirror goes up, the light comes
on and is steady, then after a couple of seconds, the light
goes out and the shutter opens. There is no reason for the
except

1) drain battery power,

2) alert any animal/person
to my presence.

3) Inform you that although you have pressed the shutter release the shutter is not yet open.

I said that. Read: "then after a couple of seconds, the light
goes out and the shutter opens."

Incidentally:
i) It is not an AF assist lamp, that uses the flash which is why the instructions refer to the flash, and the flash must be up for it to operate.

ii) What animal (op person) at the distance of the bright light you use as reference is going to stay still for 30 seconds but be startled by the distant, and not very bright, light on your camera?

That's not the point (30 seconds); it happens at any
exposure time.

P.S.
Who are you really? I would expect the Roger N Clark I know of on this group to have a much better understanding.

I said in my original post that I am on travel.
I forgot to bring the manual, and I have had the camera for only
a couple of weeks. I felt I understood the 30D well enough
to not need a manual since I have used a D60, 10D and 20D for years,
and I have no other issues with the camera.
I said I was able to turn off this light on my D60 and 10D
(never tried this on a 20D from work), so I have been
surprised I can't find how to turn off the light on the
30D.

I can see the need for the light for the long delay
(20-30 seconds) as it warns you when the shutter is about to fire,
but for the short delay I feel it is totally unnecessary.
I often use this mode on my 10D, 1D mark II when I
want to use "mirror lockup."

Why is everyone so cranky? Blue moon? (Nah....happens too
often in this NG). I'll go back to photographing
the lights of Santorini (jaw dropping gorgeous).
I thought I could get a simple answer to a simple question.
I guess not.

It's a minor annoyance (the light, and the cranky posts),
both of I'll now ignore.

Roger
