I would'nt bother with RAW if you are just getting into it. I know about 4
people that always go on about the benefits of RAW and to be honest with
you they spend all their time fiddling about with an image, without
actually ever getting an image that they are satisfied with.
So would they be satisfied just shooting JPGs?
I would answer your question like this:
Shoot RAW if you care about getting the best quality you can from your
images.
If you don't then JPG is for you. Enjoy your Nikon.
Which sounds rhetorically convincing.
But if "the best quality" (call it 100% quality)
takes ten times more time/effort/risk of failure
than 95% quality, one has to question it.
But what I find is that if I have the raw file my total editing time
is much less then is I am working
from jpeg files. As an example if I shot a whole batch of photos and
I decide that I did not like 4700K as the color temp and that the
photos look better at 5100K I can change the color temp for the whole
batch of photos at once.
When I was shooting jpeg I shot with low contrast and low saturation
since you can alway crank up these after the fact but can't always
turn them down. This meant that most of my photos needed the jpeg
image edited anyway, much easier to do the adjustments with the raw
file, IMO.
