Hi.
Although I'm totally a newbie to SLRs, I just purchased a Nikon D70S. So
far, I can't quite figure out whether I should start using RAW format
right away, or if this may cause some extra work and/or confusion. For
photo editing I'm using PE5 and ACDSee 9.
Any advice, please?
There is a perception that shooting raw involves a lot more work at
the computer. This depends on the tools you use. In the case of
Elements there is typically more work because the raw conversion is an
extra stage. (Although it can be partly automated - and there CAN be
advantages in using raw even when for most shots the conversion is
automated).
But some modern tools are appearing that treat raw files and JPEGs in
a similar way. Aperture and Lightroom are two major examples, but I
believe LightZone is another, and there are more.
Obviously, these tools assume that you are going to spend SOME time at
the computer! But some of the earlier complexity of raw conversion is
getting hidden by sliders that are to do with "image improving" rather
than "raw conversion". And these tools are likely to reduce the amount
of work needed in photo-editors later, perhaps sometimes avoiding the
need for them. For example, as my own FIRST real trial with Lightroom,
(I am a beginner with it, but it is gradually taking over as my raw
converter), at the end of a day's shooting with raw I was able
reasonably quickly to crop, align, and improve about 20 of the images
and turn them into web pages without leaving Lightroom.
I make no claims of excellence! (And I am not happy with all the
colours). But here is the result:
