For sports images, you may have more winners if you have a less cropped
field of view, to include elements that are harder to find instantaneously.
You usually want the puck in a hockey game or the ball in a soccer match.
For a killer image you will often want to crop later to get the best
framing. To use a longer lens is sometimes more difficult as the action is
too fast. Photos of birds in flight are difficult, if your subject is
rapidly moving and if your lens is too long to allow a broad field of view.
Ergo, more megapixels allows more cropping latitude.
