Well, there are printing programs that will let you do it either way: "Digital
Photo Professional", for example, the freebie editor that comes with the
purchase of a Canon EOS camera. It's not obvious that Target couldn't have
used such a program, if they'd actually cared.

It will be a bloody clever program that gets the original shown to print on an 8x10 without cutting off something or not adding side bars. If you go the side bar route and then physically cut the print, you don't have an 8x10.
Why this simple observation should require 50,000 posts is beyond me.
