You have to be more specific when you make statements like that.
Focus speed with an SLR depends largely on the lens. I don't know
about Sony, but the Canon L series lenses focus much faster and more
accurately than the cheaper models.

The Sony lens was 300mm maximum zoom - I think a 70 - 300mm. Rather than
being a smooth focus it seemed to work in a series of bursts, which
surprised me as I thought that one of advantages of the DSLR was that the
focus sensor worked as phase detection and hence provided a true measure
of focus error rather than looking for the maximum contrast. Actually,
the owner said something about working in contrast-detection mode - why he
had that setting I don't know.

In any case, it is not a given that DSLRs are always faster than non-SLR
cameras. And once again, I was not over impressed by the brightness in
the viewfinder...
