lot but it does not seem be necessary. The friend's 550EX will fire
my 580. So, I wondered how old and cheap a flash could I use as a
master on the camera with the 580 as a slave?

None. The Canon's wireless control system is highly proprietary and
the only flashes that will control your 580EX remotely will be another
580EX, a 550EX, or the Sigma 500 DG Super. Another option is the
Canon ST-E2 commander module, if you don't require an on-camera flash.

I don't particularly need an on camera flash and I checked out the
commander module. But, the module is quite expensive, so I wondered
if a second hand flash gun might be a similar price. If so, I may as
well have the second gun as an expensive module which does nothing
except send a signal to my existing flash.

So, if my plan is to work, I need to find a cheap second hand or
bargain new 550, 580, or that Sigma. Most of my kit is second hand
from a friend who upgrades more often than is probably sensible.
However, he does not have any surplus flash guns.
