Hmm--sorry about blank reply preceding!
I had the same error with only one of my 4 Canon lenses--Canon Service
in NJ fixed lens for $90, no problem since. So I guess my suggestion
is that you try switching lenses & see if that makes a difference!

My 350d has been producing error 99 more and more frequently. I checked the
manual (ages ago) and I seem to recall that it mentioned memory card
problems for error 99.
The scenario: The camera takes hundreds of successful photos, but whenever I
change the battery and turn the camera back on, I get error 99. I have to
then turn the camera off, open the CF card slot and wiggle the memory card,
then turn the camera on again. This wiggling sometimes has to be very firm
and normally I have to wiggle it several times to get the Error 99 to go
away. It has not got to the stage now where I feel like I will snap the CF
card as I have to 'wiggle' it so hard to get rid of the error. I have
another CF card and another battery and all combinations produce the same
results.
I googled for this error and found a page saying to clean the contacts on
the lens and camera. I don't understand how this related to a memory error,
but I tried it last night and much to my surprise it worked. However the
error 99 is back again today. A quick clean of the contacts again and its
gone (no CF card wiggling required).
Can anyone shed some light on this bizarre error for me and explain why
cleaning the contacts seems to help. Is there a more permanent fix, other
than sending my camera away for (probably expensive) repairs?
Cheers,
GT
