As I am flying today and have talked to US TSA security,
I was told (by a TSA agent) that on all international
flights leaving the US, no one will be allowed to carry on
any materials. Passengers will be handed a small bag
by the airlines, and you will be able to take NO personal
things of any nature (question about medicine).
No laptops, no cameras, no reading material, nothing.
Correction: I heard you can take a wallet if it is in a clear
plastic bag. I assume your passport too. But why not
a magazine? Those 18-hour flights to Australia
are going to be real boring.

Updates/corrections:
I found today on the United web site a clarification of their
carry-on policy. The new no carry on rule is for flights
to the UK only. Other international destinations have the
same basic rules as domestic flights, so we can still carry
on laptops and cameras. Same for Continental and probably
other airlines as well.

But, having traveled home yesterday (the day the plot was thwarted),
TSA was overly aggressive. They cut off my TSA lock and checked
the liquids in my bag: sunblock and mosquito repellent in my
hiking gear (either that or they wanted to inspect my hiking boots
and dirty clothes as that is all that was in there).
What really annoyed me was they put a new lock on my
bag, but as it was not my lock, and I had no way to unlock it!
I had to smash the lock with a hammer, which I had at home.
If I was at my destination, I would have had to find a hardware
store to buy a hammer.

That was after the airline lost both my bags on the trip to my
destination, one with my carbon fiber tripod and pan head.
It took 3 days the get my bags, but all was fine (I lock the
carbon fiber tripod inside the suitcase with a cable and TSA
locks).
