Do you simply unplug it?

Both OSX and Windows requires you to 'eject' the mount. In OSX click on
the icon and press Command + E. With Windows click on the icon next to
the clock, a popup will ask something like 'Stop removable drive' click
on it, message changes to 'Safe to unplug removable drive'.

Whether I simply disconnect the USB device or use Safely Remove Hardware, it
BSODs either way. If I do a Safely Remove Harware, it BSOD immediatally
without waiting for me to physically remove the device.
